The umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan today demanded the head of Atty. Francis Ver for the alleged bribery attempt on several lawmakers including Anakpawis representative Crispin Beltran. Ver is the deputy secretary general of the Kampi party of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The cause-oriented group trooped to the House of Representatives to show their support for Beltran. This came a day after Beltran’s revelation of the identity of the Malacañang operator who offered him a P2 million bribe to endorse an impeachment complaint.
Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr. said that it is not enough that Kampi sanction Ver. “What Mr. Ver did was despicable to say the least. He should be made accountable. The House of Representatives should immediately investigate the incident,” Reyes said.
“The challenge for the de Venecia led House is to conduct a thorough investigation of the bribe attempt no matter how high up it may lead to. The president’s henchmen and operators should be investigated. No one should be spared,” Reyes added.
Ver was reportedly removed from Kampi after Beltran’s expose’ on the bribe attempt.
Bayan said that the investigations into the bribe attempt will should answer pressing questions. “Under who’s authority was Ver acting on? Where is he getting the money for the bribe attempt? Surely there must be someone powerful bankrolling his operations if he intends to bribe several lawmakers. Who are these people? How high up the ladder are they placed?” Reyes asked.
“That the political party of the President herself is involved shows that Malacañang is very keen on interfering in the impeachment process. It shows that the ruling administration will go to great lengths to avoid any accountability in the scams allegedly involving the President and her men,” Reyes said.
Bayan said that Ver’s conduct should lead to his disbarment from the practice of law. “The solons whom Ver attempted to bribe can make the initial move to see to it that Ver is barred from the practice of law because of his unethical and criminal behavior,” Reyes said.
